01 — The Problem

Klaviyo Is Great — But Not Always Worth €2,000/Month

Klaviyo is the dominant abandoned cart tool on Shopify, and for big content-heavy email programs, it's genuinely good. But for the specific job of cart abandonment recovery — sending 2-4 emails to customers who left items behind — it's wildly overkill, and the pricing reflects that.

Klaviyo's pricing scales with email contacts: €45/month for 5,000 contacts, €270/month for 25,000, €700+/month for 75,000. Add SMS for cart abandonment and you're easily at €1,200-2,500/month. For the most common use case (cart recovery), 80% of those features sit unused.

Add the GDPR friction (Klaviyo stores customer data outside the EU by default — handling consent and data residency correctly takes deliberate setup), and the multilingual gap (templates per locale require manual maintenance), and you're paying enterprise prices for a function that, built natively, costs you nothing recurring.

02 — Our Solution

What We Build

A custom abandoned cart recovery system that lives inside your Shopify store and handles only what you actually need:

Multi-step flows: 1-hour reminder, 24-hour incentive (optional), 3-day final touchpoint. Configurable timing, copy, and branching per customer segment.

GDPR-native by design: Customer data stays in your Shopify store. Consent state respected from cookie banner to email send. Suppressions (Widerruf, opt-out, unsubscribe) handled in one source of truth.

Multilingual templates: One template structure, per-locale translations. Auto-detect customer language from cart locale. DE, EN, FR, IT, ES, NL, PL out of the box; more on request.

Discount logic: Conditional discount codes that apply only to recovered carts (not to general traffic). Single-use, time-limited, value-capped — you control how aggressive recovery gets.

Send via your existing infrastructure: SendGrid, Postmark, AWS SES, or your existing transactional provider. We don't lock you into a specific email vendor.

Analytics: Recovery rate, revenue recovered per email, drop-off by step, A/B test results — surfaced in your Shopify admin, not on a separate platform.

03 — For Your Market

When Klaviyo Still Makes Sense

Honest answer: if your email program is more than just cart recovery — if you run weekly campaigns, content-heavy newsletters, sophisticated segmentation across hundreds of customer attributes — Klaviyo is probably still the right tool, and a custom build for that scope would be expensive.

The custom build wins specifically when:

• Cart recovery is the primary email use case (>70% of email volume)
• You spend €500+/month on email tools
• You have 3+ language locales to maintain
• You've hit GDPR friction with a US-hosted email vendor
• You're consolidating away from a bloated app stack

For most DACH mid-market stores, that's exactly the situation — and the custom build pays back in 3-6 months. More on Shopify apps that overcharge for narrow use cases.

04 — Replaces

Replaces Apps Like

Klaviyo cart flows (€45-2,500/month), Omnisend (€16-450/month), Mailchimp with Shopify integration, Privy ($30-180/month), and DACH-focused tools that bolt on a US framework. Stores running Klaviyo at scale routinely save €6,000-24,000/year by carving cart recovery into a custom app while keeping Klaviyo for true campaign work — or eliminating it entirely if cart recovery is their only email need.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I lose Klaviyo's analytics and templates if I migrate cart recovery off?

Not necessarily. Many stores run a hybrid: keep Klaviyo for campaign work and content emails, migrate only cart abandonment to the custom build. The two systems coexist cleanly because cart events are routed at the Shopify webhook level. We help map the migration during scoping so you don't lose any analytics continuity. If you're moving entirely off Klaviyo, we export historical analytics during build and provide ongoing reporting in your Shopify admin.

How does GDPR compliance differ from off-the-shelf tools?

Three structural differences: (1) customer data stays in your Shopify store and the EU regions where it's hosted — never replicated to a US-based SaaS data warehouse. (2) Consent state from your cookie banner is the single source of truth — when a customer revokes consent, recovery emails stop within minutes, not on the next sync. (3) Suppressions and Widerruf opt-outs are handled in your store's own database, not a vendor's, so you can audit and prove compliance without depending on a vendor's reporting.

What about SMS cart recovery?

We can include SMS as part of the flow if it's part of your scope. SMS recovery has higher conversion than email but lower volume potential due to opt-in friction. We integrate with Twilio, MessageBird, or any SMS provider you specify. Cost-wise, SMS via Twilio direct is typically 50-70% cheaper than the same volume routed through Klaviyo SMS.
